Ticketmaster transfer not available yet? What the missing button actually means

You have found somebody who needs your ticket. They have the date you want. Everything lines up nicely.

Then you open Ticketmaster and the Transfer button is greyed out.

Or it is not there at all.

This is a surprisingly common point of confusion, partly because "transfer not available" can mean several different things. In some cases, transfer genuinely is not permitted. In others, it simply has not been switched on yet.

The difficult bit is that you should not guess which one applies.

Why is Ticketmaster transfer not available?

Ticketmaster says its Transfer option may be unavailable for several reasons.

According to Ticketmaster UK's current transfer guidance, these can include:

• the venue not offering Ticket Transfer yet
• the artist or venue turning transfer off for that event or section
• Ticket Transfer not yet being enabled for the event
• the event having been cancelled
• the event already having taken place
• tickets having been bought over the phone

The simplest place to start is your Ticketmaster account.

Open the relevant order and look for the Transfer option. If it is available, your order is eligible to use Ticketmaster's transfer process at that point.

If it is missing or greyed out, do not assume that sending the ticket some other way achieves the same thing.

Can Ticketmaster transfer become available later?

Yes, it can.

Ticketmaster says the Event Organiser decides when transfers are allowed, and advises customers to check their order regularly because transfer may become available closer to the event.

Its current troubleshooting guidance goes a little further. If Ticket Transfer has not yet been enabled and the Event Organiser later chooses to activate it, Ticketmaster says it will be made available no later than 48 hours before the event.

There is an important distinction there.

That does not mean Ticketmaster guarantees that transfer will become available 48 hours before every concert.

It means that if the Event Organiser chooses to activate transfer, Ticketmaster says it will be available by that point.

Some events can remain non-transferable.

"Not available yet" can mean wait and check again. It does not mean "transfer is definitely coming".

What if the Transfer button is greyed out?

A greyed-out Transfer button means you cannot currently use Ticketmaster's transfer feature for that order.

Before doing anything else, check:

• the event page
• your booking confirmation
• your Ticketmaster account
• the venue's official information
• any event-specific Ticketmaster help page

Major tours sometimes have their own ticketing restrictions, and different dates on the same tour can even have different arrangements.

It is worth checking the exact event rather than relying on what happened with another concert.

Is a delivery delay the same as transfer being banned?

Not necessarily.

Ticketmaster sometimes places a delivery delay on mobile tickets. Its Ticketmaster App guidance explains that a delivery delay can mean the barcode, resale option or transfer option becomes available closer to the event.

Again, that does not guarantee that every delayed ticket will eventually become transferable.

It simply means that not being able to access or manage everything immediately after buying the ticket is not automatically evidence of a permanent restriction.

Ticketmaster also says that if an event is eligible for Ticket Transfer, tickets can be transferred even before they have actually been delivered.

So ticket delivery and ticket-transfer eligibility are related in some situations, but they are not the same thing.

Do not use a screenshot instead

If official transfer is unavailable, sending somebody a screenshot is not a workaround.

Ticketmaster's mobile ticket guidance explicitly says screenshots cannot be used for entry with its mobile tickets.

Mobile tickets can use changing or account-linked barcodes. The person receiving a screenshot may therefore be holding an image that looks like a ticket without actually having a valid ticket in their account.

If the event requires an official Ticketmaster transfer, wait for the proper transfer feature.

What if you have already agreed to swap tickets?

This is where being precise matters.

Imagine you have Manchester tickets and have found somebody with London tickets who wants Manchester. You both want the swap, but Ticketmaster has not enabled transfer yet.

Finding the match does not make the tickets transferable.

If you are using Swoppd, you can still have found the person with the opposite ticket problem, but the actual ticket movement must follow the official provider's rules.

Do not tell the other fan that transfer will definitely open on a particular date unless Ticketmaster or the Event Organiser has actually confirmed that.

Be clear about the current status instead.

If transfer later becomes available, the tickets can then move using the official permitted process.

Could resale be available even if transfer is not?

Possibly.

Ticketmaster treats Transfer and Resale as separate features, and the options available depend on the particular event.

If you simply cannot attend and no longer need another ticket in return, check whether the Sell option is available in your Ticketmaster order.

Ticketmaster says that if the Event Organiser has not activated resale, tickets may not be eligible for resale through Ticketmaster either.

Do not assume that because one option is unavailable, the other must be available.

Check the actual order.

Can Ticketmaster exchange your ticket for another date?

Usually, this is much more limited than people expect.

Ticketmaster UK's exchange guidance sets several eligibility conditions. Among them, replacement tickets generally need to be for the same event, venue and date, although Ticketmaster says some Event Organisers may allow exceptions for long-running events.

So if your problem is "I bought Friday but need Saturday", a normal Ticketmaster exchange should not be assumed to solve it.

That is one reason fans with different dates sometimes look for each other instead.

If two people genuinely have opposite ticket needs and official transfer is allowed, swapping can solve a problem that a standard exchange cannot.

Why do organisers restrict ticket transfer?

There is no single reason that applies to every event.

Artists, venues and Event Organisers can put different ticketing controls in place depending on how they want an event managed.

For example, some events use lead-booker rules specifically to restrict tickets being transferred or resold. Ticketmaster explains that certain lead-booker events require the person named on the booking to attend and may prohibit transfer entirely.

Other events simply enable transfer later.

That is why advice from somebody who attended a completely different concert is not enough. The rules attached to your ticket for your event are what matter.

What should you do while you wait?

If Ticketmaster transfer is unavailable and the event is still some time away:

• check your Ticketmaster order periodically
• follow official event and venue updates
• be honest with anyone you are arranging a swap with
• do not promise that transfer will definitely become available
• do not send screenshots as a replacement
• keep the exact event restrictions in mind
• avoid moving ahead with a ticket exchange that depends on a feature which does not currently exist

The short answer

If Ticketmaster transfer is not available yet, it does not automatically mean anything is wrong with your ticket.

Transfer might have been disabled for that event, restricted by the artist or venue, or simply not activated yet.

Ticketmaster says transfer can become available closer to an event and that, where an Event Organiser chooses to activate it, it will be available no later than 48 hours before the show.

But there is no universal promise that every event will become transferable.

Check the exact ticket in your account, follow the official event information and do not treat screenshots or unofficial workarounds as a substitute.
